Attorney Position Available

Family Law  • Columbia, Maryland  •  Hybrid •  Full-Time

The Family Legal Advocacy Group LLC (FLAG) Attorney will provide legal services in a fast-paced family law environment. At FLAG we assist families through the most challenging times of their lives with empathy, guidance, and a strong, experienced voice in the legal process. It takes innovative minds to craft alternative solutions for families in crisis. We aim to uplift and strengthen families by allowing them to control their future.

We are a client-centered Maryland law firm dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate life's most important legal challenges. Our attorneys are supported by experienced staff, modern technology, and a collaborative culture that allows them to focus on what matters most—providing exceptional legal representation.

We believe great attorneys come from many different paths. Whether you're a newly admitted attorney eager to build a career in family law, an experienced family law litigator looking for a collaborative environment, or an attorney with an established practice in a complementary area of law seeking the support of a growing firm, we'd love to meet you.

Who We're Looking For

We are open to attorneys at all stages of their careers, including:

  • Newly admitted attorneys who are passionate about family law and eager to build a rewarding career. We provide mentorship, training, and hands-on experience to help you develop into an outstanding family law attorney.
  • Experienced family law attorneys seeking a supportive, team-oriented practice with strong administrative and litigation support. We are especially interested in associates with 3–7 years of family law litigation experience—including practice in Montgomery County—who can manage cases independently.
  • Experienced attorneys in complementary areas such as estate planning, guardianship, immigration, special education, or other related fields who are interested in bringing their existing practice to FLAG while collaborating with our family law team.
  • Solo practitioners who want to spend more time practicing law and less time running a business. If you're tired of managing billing, payroll, HR, marketing, technology, and office administration, we'll handle the business so you can focus on serving your clients.
  • Attorneys looking for flexibility, whether you're seeking a better work-life balance, control over your workload, or a place to continue practicing while gradually winding down your practice over time.

What You'll Do

Your practice will be tailored to your experience and interests. Depending on your background, you may:

  • Represent clients in divorce, custody, child support, alimony, property division, and other family law matters.
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and other legal documents with a high level of accuracy.
  • Represent clients in hearings, mediations, and negotiations, and litigate cases in Maryland courts.
  • Continue to build and serve your existing practice in estate planning, guardianship, immigration, special education, or other complementary practice areas.
  • Maintain consistent, professional communication with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
  • Counsel clients through challenging legal issues with compassion and practical guidance.
  • Participate in team strategy discussions and collaborate with attorneys across practice areas to provide comprehensive legal services.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Maryland Bar and active membership in good standing.
  • Strong writing, litigation, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to confidentiality and excellent client service.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating as part of a team.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Family law litigation experience (welcome but not required for newer attorneys).
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • Admission to practice in the District of Columbia and/or Virginia.

We are committed to mentoring attorneys who are new to practice and helping them build successful careers in family law.

Work Location

This is a hybrid position, with our main office in Columbia, Maryland. Attorneys are expected to work from the Columbia office on a regular weekly basis, with the number of in-office days depending on experience level, practice area, and caseload. We also maintain offices in Rockville, Towson, Frederick, and Annapolis, and are open to expanding additional satellite office locations to meet the needs of our attorneys and clients.

What We Offer

At FLAG, we believe attorneys should be able to focus on practicing law—not running a law firm. We provide:

  • Competitive compensation and performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Flexible scheduling and hybrid work opportunities.
  • Administrative, intake, billing, marketing, and technology support.
  • Experienced paralegal and legal assistant support.
  • Mentorship and training for attorneys new to practice or new to family law.
  • A collaborative, collegial team environment.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and leadership, including a defined path for advancement and future partnership consideration based on performance, leadership, and contribution to firm growth.
  • Flexibility for attorneys who want to build, maintain, or gradually transition their practice.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and anticipated responsibilities.

  • Associate Attorney: $70,000–$85,000 annually.
  • Senior Associate Attorney and above: $90,000–$120,000 annually, depending on experience, practice area, and portable business (may be negotiable above this range for candidates bringing substantial existing client business).

In addition to base salary, attorneys are eligible for performance-based bonuses based on billable and collected hours, business development, and overall contributions to the firm.

Benefits include:

  • Health insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Short-term disability insurance.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.

At FLAG, you'll find meaningful work, supportive colleagues, flexibility, and the opportunity to build a practice that fits your professional goals.

If you're looking for a firm where you can focus on excellent legal work while being supported by an experienced and collaborative team, we'd love to hear from you.
